Privacy Policy
The Settled app does not collect personal data. Your progress, test date and settings stay on your phone, and we cannot see them. This policy explains what the app stores, what Apple and Google handle when you buy full access, how this website uses advertising, and your rights under the UK GDPR, the Data Protection Act 2018, the Privacy and Electronic Communications Regulations (PECR) and the EU GDPR.
Who we are
Settled is a Life in the UK test practice app for iPhone and Android, with a free study website. Both are made by T Ruk (“we”, “us”), who is the data controller for the little personal data described in this policy.
Settled is an independent app. It is not connected to the Home Office, UK Visas and Immigration or the UK Government.
We are not required to appoint a Data Protection Officer, because we do not process personal data on a large scale. Questions about privacy can go to the email above.
What the app stores, and where
Everything below is saved only in the app’s own storage on your phone. It is never sent to us or to anyone else, and we have no way to see it.
| What | Why | How to delete it |
|---|---|---|
| Answers you have given, scores, streaks and mock test results | To show your progress and readiness score | Progress tab › Clear all progress, or delete the app |
| Questions you got wrong, flagged or saved | So you can review them later | Clear all progress, or delete the app |
| Your test date and reminder time | To show a countdown and send reminders you turned on | Change it in “Your test”, or delete the app |
| How many free Fast Questions and mock tests you have used | To apply the free limits | Delete the app |
| Whether you have bought full access | To unlock paid features | Managed by Apple or Google (see Purchases) |
The app does not ask for your name, email address, location, contacts, photos or any other personal details. No account is needed.
If your phone backs up app data (for example iCloud Backup or Google backup), this information may be included in that backup. Those backups are controlled by you and by Apple or Google, not by us.
Purchases
Settled is free to download. Full access costs £3.99 a week, as a subscription that renews automatically until you cancel.
All payments are handled by Apple (App Store) or Google (Google Play). They are separate data controllers for your payment and account details, under their own privacy policies:
We never receive your name, email address, card details or billing address. The app only receives a confirmation from Apple or Google, on your device, that a purchase or subscription is active, so it can unlock full access.
You can cancel a weekly subscription at any time in your Apple Account or Google Play settings. Refunds are handled by Apple or Google.
If you contact us
This is the only time we receive personal data. If you email us, for example to report a wrong answer or ask for help, we receive your email address, your name if you include it, and whatever you write.
- What we use it for: replying to you and fixing any problem you report.
- Lawful basis: our legitimate interest in answering questions and keeping the app accurate (UK GDPR and EU GDPR, Article 6(1)(f)).
- Who sees it: only us, and our email provider, which stores the message for us.
- How long we keep it: up to 12 months after your question is resolved, then we delete it. You can ask us to delete it sooner.
We never add you to a mailing list or use your email for marketing.
What the app doesn’t do
- No accounts or sign-up
- No advertising
- No analytics, crash reporting or usage tracking
- No cookies, tracking pixels or device fingerprinting
- No selling or sharing of data with anyone
- No profiling or automated decisions about you
The app uses two phone features, both of which work on your device:
- Reminders: if you turn on daily reminders, the app asks for permission to send notifications. They are scheduled on your phone; nothing is sent from a server. You can turn them off in the app or in your phone’s settings.
- Read aloud: questions are read using your phone’s built-in text-to-speech voice. The app sends no text to us. On Android, the voice is provided by the text-to-speech engine installed on your phone, under that provider’s own terms.
This website and advertising
This section covers the Settled website only, not the app. The app has no ads and no tracking.
To keep the study pages and practice questions free, the website may show ads from Google AdSense. Google is a separate data controller for the data it collects when it shows ads. When ads are shown:
- Your choice comes first. Visitors in the UK, EU, EEA and Switzerland see a consent message from Google before any advertising cookies are set. You can accept, refuse or choose which purposes you allow.
- If you consent, Google and its partners may use cookies and similar technologies to show ads based on your visits to this and other websites, to limit how often you see an ad and to measure ad performance. Lawful basis: your consent (UK GDPR and EU GDPR, Article 6(1)(a), and PECR).
- If you refuse, Google may still show non-personalised ads, using limited cookies or data needed to serve ads, prevent fraud and count impressions.
- Change your mind at any time with the privacy settings link on the website, or by clearing cookies in your browser.
Learn how Google uses this data at policies.google.com/technologies/partner-sites, and manage personalised ads at adssettings.google.com.
We don’t receive personal data from Google’s ads. We only see overall reports, such as how many times ads were shown. The free practice test runs in your browser: your answers aren’t sent to us or stored after you leave the page.
The website is hosted by GitHub Pages. GitHub may log your IP address when you visit, for security and to keep the service running, under the GitHub Privacy Statement. We don’t have access to these logs.
Your rights
Under the UK GDPR and the EU GDPR you have the right to:
- Access the personal data we hold about you and get a copy
- Correct data that is wrong or incomplete
- Erase your data
- Restrict how we use it
- Object to our use of it, including use based on legitimate interests
- Data portability: receive it in a common format or have it sent to someone else
In practice, we only ever hold emails you have sent us. For advertising data, use Google’s ad settings or contact Google, which holds that data. Your in-app progress is already fully under your control: clear it in the Progress tab or delete the app, and it is gone.
To use any of these rights, email us at kalaharihc@gmail.com. It is free, and we will reply within one month. We may ask you to confirm the email address you wrote from, so we give data only to the right person.
If you are unhappy with how we have handled your data, please tell us first so we can put it right. You also have the right to complain to the UK regulator, the Information Commissioner’s Office: ico.org.uk/make-a-complaint, phone 0303 123 1113. If you live in the EU or EEA, you can complain to the data protection authority in your country.
Other things you should know
Children. Settled is made for adults preparing for the Life in the UK test. It is not aimed at children under 13, and it does not knowingly collect data from anyone, including children.
International transfers. We do not transfer your personal data outside the UK. If you email us, your message is stored by our email provider, which may keep it on servers outside the UK under safeguards approved by UK law. Apple and Google process purchase data under their own policies.
Security. Your progress is protected by your phone’s own security, such as your passcode and device encryption. Emails you send us are kept in a password-protected account with two-step verification.
Changes to this policy. If we change how the app or website handles data, we will update this page and the date at the top before the change takes effect. If a change means the app starts collecting personal data, we will tell you in the app first.
